Most smaller booking sites are real travel companies, but cheaper offers often come with conditions such as no free cancellation or payment in US dollars. Check the cancellation rules, the currency and the company, pay by credit card and keep the confirmation.
When a comparison shows the lowest price on a site you have never heard of, a little caution is smart. This guide explains what to check, in two minutes, before you pay.
What kind of sites are these?
The sites that often appear as the cheapest are travel companies and price-comparison brands such as Vio.com, Pilot, Traveloka, Trip.com, Agoda, klook, Priceline and Traveluro. Many belong to large groups. A few are small. Google lists them as official booking partners.
The usual catches
| Catch | What it looks like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No free cancellation | "Non-refundable" next to the price | Only book if your plans are fixed |
| Another currency | Charged in US dollars | Your bank may add a foreign fee |
| Pay now | Full payment at booking | Prefer "pay at the hotel" if offered |
| Different room | Smaller room or no breakfast | Compare the room type |
| Extra fees at the hotel | City tax, resort fee | Check what is paid on site |
In our test of Novotel Paris, the cheapest offer (Pilot, 554 โฌ) was non-refundable and billed in US dollars, while the next offers cost 5 to 15 % more with better rules.
A 2-minute checklist
- Total price matches what the comparison showed (a small difference is normal).
- Cancellation rule is clear, with a date.
- Hotel name and address match the hotel you want.
- Company details exist: imprint or contact page, customer service.
- Payment by credit card or PayPal, not by bank transfer to a stranger.
- Confirmation email arrives, and the hotel can confirm it. Ask the hotel if you are unsure.
Careful: If a site asks you to pay by bank transfer, crypto or gift card, stop. That is a scam signal on any site.
When it is worth the risk
If the saving is 15 % or more and the rate is cancellable, a lesser-known site is usually fine. If the saving is small, book on a site you know.
Questions
Are Vio.com and Pilot legitimate? Yes, they are established travel booking brands that Google lists as partners. Still check each offer's conditions.
Will the hotel honor my booking? Normally yes. You can email the hotel with your confirmation number a few days before arrival.
What if I have a problem? Contact the booking site first, keep your confirmation, and pay by credit card so you can dispute a payment if needed.
