Nonstop flights to Asia are fast but often cost more. One-stop flights via Istanbul or the Gulf are usually cheaper and add several hours. In our measurement Düsseldorf to Phuket started at 624 € with one stop and about 20 hours.
Many Germans fly to Thailand, Vietnam or Japan. The main choice: pay more for fewer hours, or take a stop.
How to decide
- Price per hour saved: divide the price gap by the hours you save.
- Transfer time: a one-to-three hour connection is comfortable, longer is a rest stop.
- Baggage: one ticket checks bags through, separate tickets do not.
- Airline quality: long-haul seats, food and legroom are not equal.
