In short

In our data, the cheapest Bangkok stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 8 to 11 euros a night for two guests (LAF hotel, latitude 13 Room & breakfast, Chana Bangkok Hotel).

The old heart of Bangkok sits on a bend of the Chao Phraya river, and it is full of gold. The Grand Palace, built from 1782 when Bangkok became the capital, shines with spires and mosaic walls. Next door, Wat Pho houses a gigantic gold Reclining Buddha, and across the river, Wat Arun rises in white and porcelain. You can see all three in one day, and the beds nearby are some of the cheapest in our data.

Why people love it

  • The scale and the detail. Gold, glass mosaics and carved guardians cover every surface.
  • Wat Pho. It is known for a giant Reclining Buddha and for the traditional Thai massage school.
  • Wat Arun. Reached by a short ferry, with steep steps that you can climb.
  • The river. Boats link the temples and give a view of the city.

What to experience

  1. Start early at the Grand Palace, before the heat and the crowds, and dress with covered shoulders and knees.
  2. Visit Wat Pho and see the Reclining Buddha.
  3. Take the cross-river ferry to Wat Arun and climb the steps.
  4. Have a massage at the Wat Pho school or a nearby shop to rest your legs.
  5. Eat lunch on a side street away from the palace gate.

What does it cost?

Travel guides report the Grand Palace entry fee at about 500 baht for foreign visitors, with Wat Pho and Wat Arun charging smaller fees. We did not measure these prices ourselves, so check the current price at the gate. Be careful with people outside the palace telling you it is closed. They are usually trying to lead you to a shop or a tour.
