In our data, the cheapest Bangkok stays with a Google rating of 4.0 or higher start at about 7 to 9 euros a night for two guests (Au Bon Hostel, Do Dee Cafe', LAF hotel, latitude 13). Travel cost guides put a plate of street-food noodles at roughly 1.5 to 3 euros.
It is 6 p.m. in Bangkok. The heat of the day gives way to the smell of garlic, chilli and charcoal, and on every street corner someone lights a wok. You are standing in a place where a full dinner can cost less than the coffee at home, and where your bed for the night may cost about as much as a sandwich. That is the story of Bangkok for budget travellers, and it is the reason the city has been a favourite for decades.

Why people love Bangkok
- Food is the main attraction. Pad thai, mango sticky rice, grilled pork skewers, spicy salads: the best meals are often at plastic tables on the pavement.
- Everything is close to something. Temples, river boats, night markets and rooftop bars are all within a metro or boat ride of each other.
- It is friendly to people with little money. You can live well on a small budget, and you can also add a rooftop cocktail when you feel like it.
- It never sleeps. Early-morning alms rounds, noon markets, night food streets: there is always a next thing.

What to experience
- Wat Arun at sunset. Take the cross-river ferry and watch the temple turn orange. It costs very little and is one of the best views in the city.
- A boat on the Chao Phraya. Public river boats are a cheap way to see the city from the water.
- Street food at night. Walk, point, eat. Look for stalls with queues of locals.
- A night market. Browse, snack and bargain politely.
- Khao San Road for one evening. Loud and touristy, but fun once, and there are plenty of cheap beds nearby.

How cheap is the food?
Travel cost guides report that pad thai at a local stall costs about 50 to 80 baht, and 100 to 180 baht on the tourist-heavy Khao San Road. At the time of writing, that is roughly 1.3 to 2.2 euros and 2.7 to 4.8 euros. Guides also estimate that a traveller who eats mostly street food spends about 10 to 20 US dollars a day on meals. We did not measure food prices ourselves, so treat these as rough ranges and check the menu board before you order.
