Cancún and Playa del Carmen from about 19 euros a night: sun, cenotes and tacos on a budget

In short

In our data, the cheapest Cancún stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 19 to 25 euros a night for two guests (Hotel Jardín Cancún, Blue Coconut, Casa de Ana). In Playa del Carmen the cheapest rated hostels start at about 19 euros (Kaban Hostel, Red Panda Hostal).

You land in Cancún, the air is warm and wet, and within an hour you are sitting on a plastic chair with a plate of tacos and a cold drink while a taxi driver argues happily about football. The Mexican Caribbean has a reputation for expensive all-inclusive resorts. But a few streets away from the hotel zone you find a different coast: family-run guesthouses, hostels with hammocks, taco stands that stay open until midnight and turquoise water that costs nothing.

Why people love it

  • The water. The Caribbean here is warm, clear and free to swim in at public beaches.
  • Easy to travel. Buses between Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are frequent, so you can move along the coast without a rental car.
  • Two worlds in one trip. Beach days on the coast, and in the jungle just inland the ruins of the Maya.
  • Food that is made to be eaten standing up. Tacos, quesadillas, fresh fruit, ceviche.

What to experience

  1. Swim in a cenote. These natural freshwater pools in limestone caves are the signature experience of the Yucatán. Prices for foreign visitors differ a lot between the simple ones and the big eco-parks, so ask before you go.
  2. Take the ferry to Isla Mujeres for a day of snorkelling and a golf-cart tour.
  3. Visit Maya ruins at Tulum or Chichén Itzá on a day trip.
  4. Walk Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen in the evening, and then turn one block away from the tourist street for cheaper food.

How cheap is the food?

We did not find reliable current price lists for tacos in Cancún, so we will not give you a number that may be wrong. What travellers consistently report: street stands and local taquerías a few blocks from the hotel zone are far cheaper than restaurants in the hotel zone or on Quinta Avenida. Look for stands with a queue, and compare the menu board before you sit down.
