Canggu, Bali from about 7 euros a night: surf, rice fields and a very cheap life

In short

In our data, the cheapest Canggu stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 7 to 9 euros a night for two guests (Black Pearl Hostel, The Hide Hostel, Caroline Guest House, Wave & Chill House, Kayuma House). Travel cost guides put a scooter rental at about 4 to 6 US dollars a day.

Canggu used to be a quiet fishing village with rice fields and a black-sand beach. Then surfers found the waves, cafés opened between the paddies, and today you can drink a smoothie bowl at breakfast, surf at noon and watch a sunset with a cold coconut for dinner. It is one of the places where a small budget buys a surprisingly large life, and that is why it has become a favourite of backpackers and remote workers.

Why people love Canggu

  • Surf for every level. There are beginner waves close to the village and advanced breaks a short ride away.
  • Everything runs on a scooter. Cafés, beach clubs, yoga studios and co-working spaces are all a few minutes apart.
  • Community. People arrive for a week and stay for a month. It is easy to meet others at a surf lesson, a yoga class or a café table.
  • The sunsets. Evening at the beach, with a drink in your hand, is the daily ritual.

What to experience

  1. Take a surf lesson at a beginner-friendly beach break.
  2. Eat at a warung, a small family restaurant where local dishes such as nasi goreng and mie goreng are cheap.
  3. Walk or cycle through the rice fields behind the beach in the early morning.
  4. Visit a temple on the coast, for example for a sunset ceremony view.
  5. Take a day trip to Ubud's rice terraces or the water temples further inland.

How cheap is life there?

Cost guides estimate that backpackers in Canggu spend about 25 to 40 US dollars a day including a bed, meals and a scooter, and that food at local warungs can be kept to roughly 8 to 12 US dollars a day. A scooter rental is usually quoted at around 4 to 6 US dollars a day. These are estimates from travel sites, not our own measurements. Cafés that target tourists are noticeably more expensive than warungs.
