In short

In our data, the cheapest Hanoi stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 8 to 9 euros a night for two guests (HC Luxury Apartment, Nhà trọ NỮ Top Floor Hostel, Hanoi Train Street Hostel & Spa).

Hanoi has been a capital for more than a thousand years, and you can feel it in the streets. The Temple of Literature, founded in 1070, is a peaceful complex of courtyards and gates, and in 1076 it became home to Vietnam's first university. The Old Quarter around it still has streets named after the trades once practised there: silk, tin, bamboo, paper. You can walk through a thousand years of history in an afternoon, then drink a beer on a plastic stool for the price of a bus ticket.

Why people love it

  • The Temple of Literature. Courtyards, ponds and stone tablets for scholars.
  • The Old Quarter. Narrow streets with shops, street food and small temples.
  • Hoan Kiem Lake. A calm centre with a small temple on an island.
  • Coffee culture. Egg coffee, a Hanoi invention, in small cafés.

What to experience

  1. Visit the Temple of Literature in the morning, when it is quiet.
  2. Walk the Old Quarter, one street at a time.
  3. See Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple.
  4. Visit the Hoa Lo prison museum for the history of the French colonial period and the war years.
  5. Try egg coffee in a small café.

What does it cost?

We did not measure food or entry prices ourselves. Cost guides report that museums and temples in Hanoi charge low entry fees, and that pho, bún chả and bia hoi cost only a few thousand to tens of thousands of dong. Check the current entry prices on the day.
