In our data, the cheapest Da Nang and Hoi An stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 8 to 8 euros a night for two guests (Bantique Hotel, New Destination Hoi An Homestay, Riverside Hoi An, Dolphins Hostel & Bar).
When dusk falls over Hoi An, thousands of silk lanterns light up along the river, and the old trading port looks the way it might have centuries ago. Merchants from Japan, China and Europe once met here, and the wooden shophouses and covered bridge are still standing. The beach city of Da Nang is half an hour away, and together the two make one of the cheapest and most beautiful corners of Vietnam.

Why people love it
- The old town. Hoi An's ancient town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its streets are lit by lanterns in the evening.
- Beach and culture together. Da Nang has a long city beach, and Hoi An has its own beaches a short ride away.
- Food. Central Vietnam has its own dishes, such as cao lầu noodles and bánh mì.
- Value. Our data shows rated stays from about 8 euros a night.
What to experience
- Walk the old town in the evening when the lanterns are on, and avoid midday heat.
- Release a candle lantern on the river, a popular local ritual.
- Visit the Marble Mountains near Da Nang, a group of limestone hills with caves and pagodas.
- Join a cooking class or a market tour in Hoi An.
- Rent a bicycle and ride to the rice fields and the beach.
What does it cost?
We did not measure food prices ourselves. Cost guides place meals at local restaurants in Vietnam at a few US dollars, and the old-town streets with the most lanterns are the most touristy and most expensive. Walk one or two streets further from the river for cheaper meals. Entry to some old-town sights is sold as a combined ticket, so check the current rules.
