Madrid from about 46 euros a night: the Prado for free, the Retiro and tapas until midnight

In short

In our data, the cheapest Madrid stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 46 to 56 euros a night for two guests (FAR HOME ATOCHA, Way Hostel Madrid, Far Home Bernabeu).

At eight in the evening, when other capitals are winding down, Madrid is only getting started. The queue outside the Prado moves forward because the last two hours are free, the terraces of La Latina fill up, and dinner will not begin before nine. Spain's capital has three of the great art museums of Europe within a fifteen-minute walk, a royal palace and a huge park, and many of its best moments cost nothing. Beds are not as cheap as in Southern Europe's smaller cities, but in our data well-rated stays start at about 46 euros a night.

Why people love it

  • The art. Velázquez, Goya and Bosch at the Prado, Picasso's Guernica at the Reina Sofía.
  • The free hours. The Prado is free in the last two hours of every day.
  • The streets. Tapas bars in La Latina, cafés in Malasaña and the grand Gran Vía.
  • The Retiro. A huge park with a boating lake and a glass palace, right next to the museums.

What to experience

  1. Visit the Prado in the free evening hours (Monday to Saturday 18:00 to 20:00, Sunday 17:00 to 19:00) or pay 15 € for a quiet morning.
  2. See Guernica at the Reina Sofía (12 €, closed on Tuesday).
  3. Tour the Royal Palace (about 18 €) and watch the free changing of the guard.
  4. Row a boat in the Retiro and see the Crystal Palace.
  5. Eat tapas on the Cava Baja in La Latina, and go to the Rastro flea market on a Sunday morning.
  6. Watch the sunset at the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian temple in a park, for free.

What does it cost?

Entry prices we checked on 30 October 2026: Prado 15 € (free in the last two hours), Reina Sofía 12 €, Royal Palace about 18 € (9 € reduced). The Retiro, the Plaza Mayor, the Rastro and the Temple of Debod are free. We did not measure food prices; a weekday set lunch (menú del día) is the classic way to eat well for less. Our full list with opening hours and how to get there is on the Madrid city page.
