In our data, the cheapest Mexico City stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 14 to 18 euros a night for two guests (Hv7, Hostel Mundo Joven Catedral, HOM Centro histórico).
Stand in the middle of the Zócalo and you are standing on the heart of two empires. Beneath your feet lay the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, and around you rise the cathedral and palaces that the Spanish built on its ruins. A few steps from the cathedral, the excavated Templo Mayor shows what was underneath. Few cities let you read so many centuries in one walk, and the old centre is also where our cheapest rated stays are.

What to experience
- Walk the Zócalo and visit the Templo Mayor next to the cathedral to see the excavated Aztec temple precinct.
- Take a day trip to Teotihuacan, the ancient city with the Pyramid of the Sun, roughly an hour or so from the city by bus.
- See the murals in the historic centre, for example at the National Palace.
- Visit the National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec Park.
- Eat tacos at a stand with a queue of locals.
What does it cost?
We did not measure food or entry prices ourselves. Travellers consistently report that street tacos and set lunches (comida corrida) cost a fraction of restaurant prices, and that many museums charge modest entry fees. Check the current prices on the day, as fees for foreign visitors can differ.
