Pattaya is famous for its neon-lit Walking Street, bars and loud nightlife. But on the northern edge of the city stands something very different: a huge temple building carved entirely from wood, with towering spires and intricate sculptures. Work on the Sanctuary of Truth began in the early 1980s, and craftsmen are still adding carvings. Pattaya is a city of contrasts, and both sides are cheap.

Travel guides report that local food stalls and night markets are far cheaper than tourist restaurants, and that bars on Walking Street charge more than elsewhere in the city.
