In short

In our data, the cheapest Phuket stays rated 4.0 or higher start at about 12 to 15 euros a night for two guests (Summer Hotel, The Dorm Hostel, Black Pantera Hostel).

Most people think of Phuket as beaches and nightlife. But walk through Phuket Town in the morning and you find a different island: Sino-Portuguese shophouses in pastel colours, shrines with incense smoke, noodle shops that have been open for generations. On a hill in the south, a white marble Buddha looks out over the bays. Phuket has a cultural side that most visitors miss, and the cheapest rated stays in our data start at just 12 euros a night.

Why people love it

  • The Old Town. Colourful shophouses and street art, with cafés and small museums.
  • Temples. Wat Chalong is one of the island's best-known temples, and the Big Buddha is a landmark you can see from far away.
  • Beaches. Kata, Karon and Patong are all within reach.
  • Food. Southern Thai cooking is spicy and fresh, with seafood and curries.

What to experience

  1. Walk Phuket Old Town and stop at a café or a noodle shop.
  2. Visit Wat Chalong, the largest and best-known temple of Phuket.
  3. Go up to the Big Buddha for the view, and dress modestly.
  4. Visit the Sunday walking street in the Old Town, an evening market with food and crafts.
  5. Spend an afternoon at a beach such as Kata or Karon.

What does it cost?

We did not measure food or entry prices ourselves. Travel guides report that temples such as Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha are free or ask for donations, and that local food stalls are far cheaper than beachfront restaurants. Bring a cover for shoulders and knees for the temples.
